There are growing fears that Syria stands on the edge of a return to widespread violence after days of sectarian bloodshed. A human rights group estimates it has killed at least 1,000 people in the city of Latakia. The country’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has appealed for unity during the worst period of unrest since he took control last December. He has also vowed to hold anyone involved in harming civilians accountable, after days of clashes where Syrian security forces allegedly killed hundreds of civilians from the Alawite religious minority. Amid the fighting, hundreds of civilians living along the Mediterranean coast have fled their homes.
